Of course. It all made sense now.

The first chapter was about building the vessel, laying down the weight that would hold everything together, while the second was about forging that vessel and turning that weight into real, lasting strength. Something I was supposed to spend months training for by pushing, straining, and grinding the softness into hard muscle through effort alone.

Yet, in an unexpected turn of events, my body had already done it.

The breakthrough into the Body Tempering Realm had taken the long road and crushed it into a single, violent moment. The pain, the tearing, the cramping, the twisting of flesh and bone were all part of it.

The process devoured the excess fat, hardened what had once been soft, and reforged the frame that carried me. What should have taken months of labor had been forced into a handful of unbearable minutes.

That was the difference between mortal effort and cultivation. The same result, reached not through patience, but through pain.

I closed the book slowly and let it rest on my chest. Lying there, I couldn’t help but feel a strange kind of gratitude.

It had all been coincidence, or maybe a convergence. I hadn’t known the breakthrough would fulfill the next step of the Fortified Root Technique, but it had, and time was no longer on my side as the days slipped away. Two months had already passed since I’d been bedridden, which meant that in only a few days, the Spiritual Garden would open.

Only those in the Body Tempering Realm would be permitted to enter, and now, standing at the edge of that line, I was no longer behind it. I had crossed it.

I let out a breath of relief, and for the first time in a while a grin pulled at my lips, because somehow, I had made it in time.

But of course, when one goal was finally met, there was always another waiting in its shadow. The system never let me linger in accomplishment for long. The last flicker of light shimmered before my eyes, a new quest notification.

Still curious, I reached for the manual again.

Only one chapter remained, the third and final.

I carefully peeled the page open with the edge of my thumb, careful not to tear it with the grit still caught beneath my nails. The subtitle was clear in its call.
